What Counts as Project Leadership Experience?

PMI's definition (paraphrased):

Experience leading and directing projects — regardless of your job title. You must have been leading the project work, not just participating. Focus on the role, not the title.

Does qualify:

  • Leading a cross-functional team to implement new software
  • Managing scope, schedule, budget, and resources for a product launch
  • Serving as a Scrum Master coordinating sprint work
  • Directing a construction or renovation project
  • Managing a process improvement initiative
  • Overseeing a marketing campaign from planning to execution

Does NOT qualify:

  • Participating on a project team as a subject matter expert
  • Routine operational work (not a unique project)
  • Administrative support for a PM
  • Simply attending project status meetings

How to Calculate Your Months

Key rules:

  • Use non-overlapping months only — parallel projects in the same period count as one period, not multiple
  • Part-time PM experience counts — but PMI may scrutinize it
  • Experience can span your entire career — no recency requirement
  • Multiple roles at the same time = count months once, not twice

Example Calculation

Project A: Jan 2020 – Jun 2021 = 18 months
Project B: Apr 2021 – Dec 2021 = 9 months (but overlaps A by 3 months)
Project C: Feb 2022 – Jan 2024 = 24 months
Non-overlapping total: 18 + 6 + 24 = 48 months ✓ (exceeds 36)

35 Contact Hours Requirement

Contact hours are formal PM education — not self-study, job experience, or on-the-job training.

PMI-authorized training courses
University PM courses
Online PM courses (Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, Udemy)
PMI chapter events with PM content
PMI virtual seminars and webinars
Self-study / reading PMBOK
On-the-job experience
Attending project meetings

Application Eligibility Window

2026 update: PMI extended the eligibility period to 10 years. Your qualifying experience must have occurred within the last 10 years (previously 8 years for some pathways).

Once your application is approved, you have 12 months to pass the exam (3 attempts within that window).
